Guwahati. A muslim mob created ruckus at Lanka Fultoli Model Hospital and beaten up the on-duty doctor as well as two nursing staff. A young doctor was attacked on Tuesday by family members of a deceased Covid-19 patient at a Covid care centre in Assam’s Hojai district.
The incident took place at Odali Model Hospital at around 1:30 pm. In a viral video of the incident, some people can be seen attacking and kicking the doctor identified as one Dr. Seuj Kumar Senapati.
According to reports, family members of the deceased patient brutally thrashed the doctor following the patient’s demise. Dr. Seuj Senapati had sustained serious injury for which he was referred to Guwahati Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
COVID patient named Giasuddin had died of COVID 19 on Tuesday. Alleging his death due to alleged negligence of physician as well as nursing staff, the mob went on a rampage and vandalised the Fultoli Model Hospital.
Meanwhile police from Lanka PS rushed to the spot and were able to bring the situation under control.
“The relatives of the patient complained to me that the patient’s condition is serious. When I was seeing the patient, I found that he had already expired. The relatives of the patient vandalised the furniture of the hospital and attacked me,” Dr. Seuj Kumar Senapati said.

In another tweet he said – 24 culprits involved in this barbaric attack have been arrested and the chargesheet will be filed at the earliest. I am personally monitoring this investigation and I promise that justice will be served.

DGP Assam said –
We are taking the physical assault incident on Dr. Senapati of Udali Hospital very seriously. He’s fighting the Pandemic at the frontline, so any assault on him is like assaulting all the frontline workers. And @assampolice would not let that happen. #RespectTheSaviour

In a letter written to Deputy Commissioner Hojai, the Assam Medical Service Association (AMSA) alleged that the doctor was ‘brutally assaulted and tortured by relatives of late Giasuddin who was a Covid patient and admitted at around 11 am and expired at Udali CCC at around 2 pm. The miscreants then damaged the hospital building and ransacked other important instruments required for care’.
Urging him to take strict action in the matter, the association said, “This type of incident demoralises our serving attitude. They are not only enemies to doctors but also the entire community. We request to arrest the miscreants in 12 hours and stringent punishment be given so that such incidents do not happen in future.”
