India beats China to become Member Of UN’s Prestigious ECOSOC Body

In a significant victory, defeating China at the UN, India becomes a member of the United Nation’s Commission on Status of Women, a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). India will be a member of the prestigious body for four years from 2021 to 2025.

TS Tirumurti, permanent representative of India to the United Nations, announced the news on twitter saying, India has been elected as a member of the United Nation’s Commission on Status of Women (UNCSW), a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

UN held elections for two seats between three countries include, including India, Afghanistan, and China in the Asia-Pacific States category. Beating India India got 38 votes of the 54 ballots cast. meanwhile, China only got 27 votes and failed to get the required majority of 28 votes. Moreover, Afghanistan got the highest 39 votes. With this significant victory, India and Afghanistan will join Argentina, Austria, Dominican Republic, Israel, Latvia, Nigeria, Turkey, and Zambia, which were elected by acclamation, to the Commission on the Status of Women for a four-year term beginning from 2021-2025.

The Commission on the Status of Women is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946. The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It has 54 members, elected by the General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms. Each year, ECOSOC structures its work around an annual theme of global importance to sustainable development.

Earlier, on June 18, India was elected as one of the non-permanent members to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with an overwhelming majority of 184 votes out of 192, where the minimum requirement was 128. That was for the eighth time that India had been elected to the UNSC. India has served seven times earlier: 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and 2011-2012.
