New Delhi. NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) has constituted a committee to inquire into the complaints of alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal. The committee was formed by NHRC Chairperson Justice Arun Mishra.
This comes after the Calcutta High Court dismissed the government’s plea on Monday seeking a recall of a judgment by a five-judge bench that directed the National Human Rights Commission to examine all cases of human rights violations during post-poll violence. The committee was formed in accordance with the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
The committee, formed by the NHRC chairperson, will be headed by Rajeev Jain, member, NHRC to enquire into complaints of post-poll violence in West Bengal.
The committee members are —

2) Atif Rasheed, Vice Chairperson, National Commission for Minorities
3) Dr. Rajulben L. Desai, Member, National Commission for Women
4) Santosh Mehra, Director General (Investigation), NHRC
5) Pradip Kumar Panja, Registrar, West Bengal State Human Rights Commission
6) Shri Raju Mukherjee, Member Secretary, West Bengal State Legal Services Authority
7) Manzil Saini, DIG (Investigation), NHRC
Committee will examine all cases of post-poll violence in W. Bengal, complaints about which have already been received in the National Human Rights Commission or which may be received. Committee will examine the complaints, which have been received by the W. Bengal State Legal Services Authority and also further complaints that may be received by the Legal Services Authority.
The cases will be examined, which will include visiting the affected areas, and shall submit a comprehensive report to the Calcutta High Court about the present situation. It will also look into steps to be taken to ensure confidence of the people that they can peacefully live in their houses and also carry on their occupation or business to earn their livelihood.
The Committee shall also point out the persons, prima-facie, responsible for crime and the officers who maintained calculated silence on the issue. The Committee is scheduled to start its inquiry process immediately.
Post-poll violence
After 2 May Photos and video clips of murders, arson, and ransacking of party offices had gone viral on social media. The BJP had also claimed that two of its workers were allegedly gang-raped by members of the Trinamool Congress.
However, this was dismissed by the West Bengal Police. In a tweet, the West Bengal Police had termed the claims of gangrapes as ‘fake’.
