India must be liberated from Chinese influence
The Swadeshi Jagaran Manch has been reiterating time and again that China is the biggest threat to our economy, the jobs of our youth, our national security and integrity. After 1996-97, in the last 19 years, imports from China have risen 78 times and it has reached nearly 22 percent of our domestic manufactures. Today we are importing from China the bulk of our machinery, electronics and electrical appliances and consumer products, tires, project inputs as well as industrial products from China. The heavy imports from China are becoming an obstacle in the way of employment to our growing youth power. The demographic dividend gifted by nature is being ruined by Chinese imports. In view of these reasons, the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch has declared the year 2017, as the “Year of Opposition to Chinese Products, Chinese Investments and Chinese Companies”, so that the nation can be saved from Chinese aggression. The activists of Swadeshi Jagaran Manch are reaching into the farthest corners of the country and are acquainting people of the dangers from China, rousing awareness in them about the need to boycott Chinese products and to purchase Indian products instead, so that jobs in the country can be protected. Uptil now one crore Indians have signed and vowed to boycott the Chinese and other foreign products.
This national council of the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch welcomes the initiative of the government to give primacy to the purchase of products produced within the country. This effort of the government under article 153 of the General Financial Rules 2017 will certainly reduce the purchases of products made abroad including in China. In addition, the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch demands that this scheme should be extended to domestic services as well. That is to say, government departments should not utilise the services of any foreign advisor or service provider. Not only will this save invaluable foreign currency, but it will also end foreign influence on policy making. The Central Government is also urged to inspire state governments also to make rules along the lines of the proposed central rules, so that the state governments also accord primacy to the purchase of domestic products.
In this context the National Council of the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch also demands from the government that a “Buy and Hire Indian Act” be legislated along the lines of the “Buy American Act 1933”, wherein it should be made compulsory for all departments of the Centre and the States, to buy only Indian products and services.
We appreciate the stand of government of India in relation to the ‘One Belt, One Road’ (OBOR) of China inspired by the nefarious intention to increase its hold over the markets and economies of the world, since this move by China is against Indian interests. In the context of the Chinese attempt to bring the whole world into its influence from the economic perspective, it is necessary for the Indian government to formulate a strong anti-China policy. The National Council of the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch asks the government to deliberate seriously over the following issues:
- Norms should be fixed for the quality of imports from China and other countries to ban the import of substandard products, and products that fall short of the norms should be banned. This system is provided for by the World Trade Organisations rules and other countries are also utilising it.
- No new trade agreement should be made with China including the “Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership” (RCEP).
- It is highly unfortunate that inspite of increasing political attacks by China, Central and State governments are entering into investment agreements with Chinese companies. They do not even fail to state that they do not want Chinese products, but welcome Chinese investment. Some state governments are even organising conferences to attract Chinese investments. This mind set should be checked and investment agreements with Chinese companies should be scrapped.
- Chinese companies are getting control over our companies and several Indian companies are also entering into investment agreements with Chinese companies, due to which our trade and industry are coming under the sway of Chinese companies. Financial nourishment of our “Start Ups” is also coming from various Chinese companies and their ownership is also going into Chinese hands. We should not forget that most Chinese companies are under the control of the Chinese government. In this situation, the growing dependence on Chinese companies can land the security, trade and industry of the country into a serious crisis. This is why, it is necessary to ban Chinese investments in Indian companies.
- Chinese companies are winning construction contracts and are increasing their presence in sensitive areas, especially in Northeastern states, border states etc., which is increasing the danger to India’s security. This is why, Chinese companies should be prohibited from filling tenders for construction contracts.
