The Telangana Police on Monday announced that it has banished film critic Kathi Mahesh from Hyderabad for six months for hurting religious sentiments. The government said this could be a threat to the law and order of the city.
Kathi Mahesh, a film critic and writer was detained by Hyderabad city police. He was then taken to his native village in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor.
Kathi Mahesh sparked controversy after his comments on Lord Ram during a TV debate after which several Hindu organisations including BJP MLA T Raja Singh demanded his arrest.
Speaking to the media, Director General of Police (DGP), Telangana, Mahendra Reddy confirmed the decision and said that Kathi Mahesh has been banned from entering Hyderabad for six months, owing to his using media channels to make comments against a certain community and hurting their sentiments.
The police chief also said that the presence of Kathi Mahesh was also threatening the peace and tranquility of the city. DGP also warned those inciting communal hatred and said that police will deal with them with a firm hand.
Meanwhile, police have also issued a notice to the regional news channel which telecasted the debate and is waiting for their reply after which action could be initiated under the provisions of the Cable TV Network Regulation Act if a violation was found.
Earlier, this morning Hyderabad Police placed Hindu godman Swami Paripoornananda under house arrest after he was planning to lead a ‘Darmika Chaitanya Yatra’ protesting against the comments made by Kathi Mahesh.
