Need to streamline agriculture sector, loan waiver not a solution: Dr Mohan Bhagwat ji

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday spoke to a conclave of businessman and claimed that the problems plaguing the agriculture sector will not be solved by loan waivers.

He added that the immediate need was to streamline the agriculture sector in order to make it a profitable proposition. The business class should extend support to farmers and help them stay tuned to latest developments in technology, he said.

That Bhagwat should voice concern over loan waivers soon after Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis’ decision last Saturday to write off loans of 79 lakh farmers assumes political significance, said observers.

The loan waiver will entail an additional burden of Rs 34,000 crore on the state exchequer. As a result, the Fadnavis government will be compelled to drastically cut down expenditure on development projects, the observers said, adding that this may have prompted Bhagwat to hoist a warning signal to the state government.

“Mohanraoji’s statement is a clear indication that the Sangh Parivar is opposed to populist policies,” said a senior state BJP leader. “The CM will hereafter have to see that he doesn’t tread on RSS’ toes,” he added.

Bhagwat said that improvement in production techniques, good infrastructure and adequate support price to farmers are long-term solutions to chronic problems farmers have been facing for long.

He also said that a loan waiver cannot help farmers frame new strategies to tackle their problems, and that long-term planning is urgently needed in this connection.
